Network tier
Where a host sits in the network topology, from the external edge to internal management. It sets exposure, and therefore patch cadence.

A classification of a host by position in the topology: externally facing, internal tiers, management. It is the most available proxy for "how exposed is this".
It is used in practice as the input to patch cadence: the more external the tier, the tighter the rhythm.
Why it is usually free text
In many estates the location is recorded in a free-text field written by people over many years, so the same tier appears in three spellings. A tool relying on that field has to normalise it, and has to decide up front what happens when two rows for the same host disagree. The safe answer is to take the more external of the two.
